Ethiopian national elections delayed amid security and logistical challenges

Ethiopian national elections have been delayed again due to the opposition parties stating that they would not take part, and because no voting can be held in the Tigray region due to the conflict, further complicating the status of the national election. The national election scheduled to be held on 5 June 2021, has been delayed indefinitely. The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), stated that the opening of polling stations and voter registrations have pushed the voting date, and will be announcing the new date of elections which should not be more than three weeks. More logistical reasons are in play, such as finalizing voter registration, training of electoral staff and printing and distribution of ballot papers. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly promised that this election would be free and fair.
