On 26th August 2021, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court convicted Syrian Nationals for committing war crimes. The first, a 43-years old man, was sentenced to life imprisonment. He had joined a group in Syria that later became a ramification of the Islamic terrorist group Al-Nusra Front, whose attacks victimized 8,700 people according to the German prosecution service. He guarded and protected the shooting of a lieutenant colonel in the Syrian army as a representative of the Assad regime in 2012 on the banks of the Euphrates. The second defendant, a 36-years old man, filmed the transport of the prisoner to the place of execution and his execution for propaganda purposes. The decision is not binding yet because lawyers of both defendants asked for an acquittal. On the other hand, the prosecution demanded the conviction for life imprisonment regarding both defendants.
