The surge of violence against the Hindus has raised anger and renewed fears amongst Hindu communities safety. A recent death involved a sweetshop and a hotel owner, Liton Chandra Ghosh, who was protecting his teenage employee from violent customers. He died from multiple strikes of a shovel.

On January 17th, 2026, the next day of a fuel station worker’s death, another Hindu man was killed in an altercation. A 55-year-old Hindu man, Liton Chandra Ghosh, who was the owner of a sweetshop and hotel, was hit on the head with a shovel and died to his injuries on the spot in Gazipur district of Bangladesh.
According to the police and eyewitnesses, a customer, 28-year-old Masum Mia, entered Liton Gosh’s sweetshop at 11 am, and an argument over a minor issue surfaced between Masum Mia and a 17-year-old employee, Ananta Das. Quickly after, the argument escalated to violence. Masum’s parents, Mohammad Swapan Mia and Majeda Khatun arrived at the sweetshop and joined in the physical fight. Liton Gosh tried to intervene to protect his employee and to calm down the situation. However, he was also attacked and was hit on the head with a shovel multiple times, leading to critical injuries and death. Such occurrences intervene with the right to life as a fundamental human right of every individual.
Following the incident, locals gathered at the scene and detained, Swapan Mia, Majeda Khatun and Masum Mia, and handed them to the police upon their arrival. The Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in Charge has confirmed the incident and affirmed that the three suspects are in custody.
These back-to-back Hindu deaths have caused anger in the local community and resurfaced concern over the safety of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Assumptions have arisen that the latest killings are part of a broader pattern of violence and targeted attacks against the Hindu minorities. Additionally, India has expressed its grave concerns about the ongoing pattern of attacks on minorities and the lack of protection. India has expressed its hopes for decisive and effective action taken by Bangladesh to correct such acts of communal violence.
